Autumn is just around the corner. For many campers, this means shorter days, colourful forests, and crisp mornings with a hot cup of coffee in front of the tent. But autumn also brings unpredictable weather: wind, rain, and sometimes even storms.
Fortunately, as a Holtkamper owner, you don’t have to let that stop you. Our tent trailers are designed and tested to remain reliable even in challenging conditions – from the rugged plains of Iceland to the high cliffs of Brittany.
Still, we are often asked: “What’s the best approach when the wind picks up?”
That’s why we’ve put together the most important tips and points of attention, so you can continue to enjoy your Holtkamper in autumn as well.
General storm tips for your Holtkamper
Always secure properly
Make sure your Holtkamper is firmly pegged all around.
Secure the awning points
With the Aero, Kyte or Nano, always secure the awning points with at least five pegs. Use the long pegs and double up the elastics.
Wind from the front? Unzip the side panels
If the wind is hitting the front directly and you’re using the awning without a front wall, unzip the side panels first. This allows the wind to pass through more easily and prevents the awning from acting like a sail.
Use storm elastics
When in doubt, always use them! Attach the storm elastics to the green bisonyl loops and secure them with strong pegs. The elastics allow the awning to move with the wind and absorb heavy gusts.
Avoid fixed guy lines
Never use rigid guy lines. These cannot absorb wind pressure and may create damaging tension on the canvas.
Front wall attached?
If you have attached the front wall to the awning, the side panels can remain in place. Just make sure the awning with front wall is also secured tightly with storm elastics.
When the wind really picks up…
Sometimes, conditions simply get too extreme. In that case, it’s wise to temporarily pack away the awning. You can do this in two ways:
1. Folding the awning over the trailer (the quick method)
-
Remove the front and side panels.
-
Take out the kitchen and awning bows.
-
Lower the mast.
-
Fold the awning over the trailer so that the awning ends hang over the back of the roof.
-
Secure the awning points at the rear of the trailer.
This method is fast and ideal when you need to act quickly.
2. Rolling up the awning and fastening it (the thorough method)
-
Remove the front and side panels.
-
Take out the kitchen and awning bows.
-
Lower the mast.
-
Roll up the awning (easiest with two people).
-
Secure the roll at the front edge of the roof using the toggles and the supplied green straps.
This approach takes a little more effort but ensures neat and safe storage.

Whether you are camping in the Netherlands or on an adventure along the Breton coast: the weather can change quickly. With good preparation and the right storm tips, you can be sure of carefree camping – even in autumn.
